Greek Free / Open Source Software Society(GFOSS) |
GFOSS is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 by 25 Greek Universities, Technological Institutes and Research Centers. Our major goal is to promote the use and development of Open Technologies for Education, Public Administration and Business in Greece. We, therefore, aspire to become a knowledge hub and a platform for dialogue on Free Software, Open Content & Open Hardware and their benefits. The major Greek Universities, Research Centers and Technological Institutes are members of the GFOSS, while leading members of the Greek community of Open Technologies users and developers play a major role in the implementation of our actions, through mutual cooperation and active participation. GFOSS is affiliated with Creative Commons and a founding member of COMMUNIA. GFOSS experts share extensive multidisciplinary experience in the development and operation of major transparency and public engagement projects in Greece. These include the projects on electronic deliberation for participatory decision making and open innovation and collaboration contests.
Through our initiatives we intend to contribute to the following: - Raising public awareness about the benefits of using and developing Open Technologies.
- Providing reliable and timely information regarding Open Technologies, both in Greece and internationally.
- Fostering cooperation and equal participation for all stakeholders that are directly or indirectly involved in the promotion and development of Open Technologies in Greece, such as the community of Open Technologies developers and the entrepreneurs interested in Open Technologies.
- Establishing a number of Open Technologies promotion centers in Greece. (Their tasks will include organizing training seminars, cataloging Open Technology needs in various business sectors, and indexing all Greek institutions and organizations with an active interest in Open Technologies).
- Coordinating the efforts of the Greek groups of Open Technology volunteers, enabling them to form the backbone of Greek FOSS development and implementation.
- Supporting the development and promotion of Open Technologies-based business models, and providing businesses with information on the adoption of Open Technologies.
- Offering technical support for Open Technologies applications. In particular, supporting localization efforts, developing a glossary, and contributing to the development of open source applications for which there is demand in Greece.
Achieving our targets will rely on the close cooperation of the following parties: - the Greek community of Open Technologies users and developers,
- laboratories using and developing Open Technology applications in Greek Universities, Technological Institutes and research centers,
- interested parties/potential users (public administration, educational institutions, businesses),
- ICT companies, which will establish an adequate base of business models for Open Technologies support and development.
